How to Create a Volume on the IBM V3700 or V7000: Basic!

How to Create a Volume on the IBM V3700 or V7000: Basic!

This does not include instructions on Global Mirrors, Change Volumes or Flash Copies - look for this in a different post.

Lets get started!

Select Volumes by Pool (or just Volumes).

In the Volumes by Pool screen, select New Volume.

Select a Volume Preset.
Generic: create volumes that use a set amount of capacity from the selected storage pool.
Thin-Provision: create large capacity-volumes that only use the capacity that is written by the host application from the pool.
Mirror: Create volumes with two physical copies that provide data protection. Each copy can belong to a different storage pool to protect data from storage failures.
Thin Mirror: Create volumes with two physical copies to protect data from failures while using only the capacity that is written by the host application.

Once you’ve selected the volume type, enter the capacity (GB or TB) and give it a name.
  • ·         If you use VMware SRM, do NOT use ‘grp’ in the name... anywhere.
    • ·         Be specific with the name. Title it along the lines of what it will be used for…

      o   Example:
      • If it’s a SQL Volume, try HQ-SQL01-TempDB.
      • For Application servers, mention the App running within it.

Next you can either click Create or Create and Map to Hosts. For this tutorial, I selected Create & Map to Host.
Once the new volume has been created, click continue (this screen does not go away automatically).

Next up, select the host, or host cluster you want to map the new volume to.

This screen is a little misleading, after you’ve selected the cluster (or host), the volume will not appear in the Unmapped Volumes pane. Instead it’s displayed in the Volumes Mapped to the Host pane.

Next you click Apply (or Map Volumes). If you picked the wrong host, click cancel.

Confirmation! Click Close.

So the next window doesn’t automatically close after you’ve mapped the Volume to the Host/Cluster. So yes, click the X.

And you’re finished!
